A Republican lawmaker has forced a House vote this week to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the war in Iran.
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, a vocal critic of his party's policies who earlier this year lost his GOP primary when President Donald Trump endorsed his opponent, read the articles of impeachment on the House floor on Tuesday. He introduced the resolution as privileged, which under House rules forces a floor vote within two legislative days.
Massie invoked a procedural maneuver that bypasses party leadership and puts some of his fellow Republicans in a difficult position weeks before the midterm elections, as the ongoing war in Iran has drawn long-term questions about military intentions combined with economic impacts raising prices on all Americans.
"By engaging in hostilities in Iran for more than 90 days without congressional authorization, Secretary Hegseth is breaking the law and must be held accountable," Massie, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, said Tuesday. "Secretary Hegseth's constitutional violations extend beyond the illegal war in Iran.

WASHINGTON, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Republican U.S. Representative Thomas Massie filed articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday, accusing him of abusing his office by executing an order for hostilities against Iran without approval by Congress.
The impeachment resolution is unlikely to pass, but the maneuver by the Kentucky Republican could force a vote in the chamber that could be difficult for some of his fellow Republicans as they prepare to leave Washington before November's midterm elections.
"The entire Department is unified behind the Secretary’s vision and will continue working to put our warfighters and America first," Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson said in an emailed statement.
Massie filed his articles of impeachment against Hegseth as privileged, meaning the House must take them up within two legislative days.
